Dean Barton Poole July 8, 1927 – June 9, 2018 Dean Barton Poole of Williamstown, West Virginia, departed this life at 1:30 AM on June 9th, 2018 at his daughter’s home with his family by his side. He was 90 years of age. Dean was a devoted father and grandfather, well-known for his sense of humor, and was adored by his many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Born on July 8, 1927 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania his family moved to Parkersburg in 1928. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1946, where he was a star athlete in both football and track. As #33 lineman, he helped lead the Big Reds to many victories, earning the nickname of “Reat Pleat with the Fleet Feet”.

After high school, he held various jobs, including several years at Commercial Bank & Trust. In November 1957 he married Norma Weaver of New Haven, West Virginia and in the early 1960s they had their children Susan and Mark. Soon after getting married he started his career as an accountant at the Brockway Glass Company of Vienna WV.

While working full-time and raising his family, he attended night classes at Marietta College and earned his B.A. in the late 1970s. After retiring in 1988, he worked part-time as accountant for the American Legion in Parkersburg. Throughout his life he took joy in simple pleasures and found time for the people and things he loved most.

He and his brothers were inseparable throughout their lives, spending weekends hunting and fishing and having adventures in his bright-green 1963 Willys Jeep. As a loyal fan of the WVU Mountaineers, he eagerly looked forward to the start of every new season. He was a lover of nature and could identify many species of birds and trees.

He was a devout fan of classic country music, old Westerns and loved working the Sunday Crossword puzzle with his kids. Dean is survived by his wife Norma Lee, his daughter Susan (Joe) Miller, his son Mark (Suzanne) Poole, and grandchildren Christopher Cyran, Olivia Thacker and her fiancé Cody Merritt, Amanda (Matt) Ledbetter, Tyler (Jennifer) Miller and great-grandchildren Audrey Cyran, Phebe McKray, Emma Grace Ledbetter, Owen Ledbetter, Thomas Miller, Olivia Miller, and his beloved dog Missy as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins he loved very much. He is preceded in death by his parents Jesse William and Ruth Cathleen Dines Poole, his brothers William Andrew Poole, Robert Edward Poole, Donald Hudson Poole, Ira A. Poole, and his sister Zara Margaret Shepard.

A memorial service will be held 4 PM, Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 prior to the service. To send flowers or a remembrance gift to the family of Dean Poole, please visit our Tribute Store.
