Edward William Frykman passed away peacefully at his Walnut Creek, CA home the evening of April 13, 2018. His wife of 55 years, Nancy, was at his side. Born June 3, 1936 in Bradford, PA, Ed was the second of four children of Susan (Maltby) and Carl Frykman.

Ed spent the early years of his life in Bradford before moving to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. A standout football player in high school, Ed was recruited to play football at the University of Florida.

Following graduation from Florida with a… Read More » BS in Business, Ed enlisted in the Navy and graduated from Officer Candidate School. He proudly served on active duty for 3 years followed by additional service in the Naval Reserves. It was the Navy that would bring Ed to Long Beach, CA where he met and fell in love with an admiral’s daughter, Nancy Jane McCloy.

Ed and Nancy were married in Pasadena in 1962; they were 48-year residents of San Marino, CA. Ed is survived by his wife; his two children, Bill (Katherine) and Cynthia (Peter Heckler); his six grandchildren (Wyatt Frykman, Anna Heckler, Olivia Frykman, Will Heckler, Julia Frykman and Charlotte Heckler); and his two sisters Virginia (Dave) Giusti and Sally (Curt) Young. His older sister, Sue Ann Roberts, preceded him in death.

He loved his family immensely; his grandchildren loved their Papa. Ed spent 55 years working in the financial services industry. The majority of his career was E.F. Hutton & Co. where Ed managed Hutton’s Los Angeles regional office.

He retired in 2007 from Crowell, Weedon & Co, but remained active in business serving on the boards of directors for both Acacia Research and Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals until his passing. Ed lived life well. He served as a mentor to many in the office, the kitchen, and on a trout stream.

After retirement, Ed immersed himself in wood working; his projects included lovingly making doll beds for all four of his granddaughters. The experience of spending time in Ed’s kitchen- be it in San Marino, at a horse camp, or near a trout stream- was not one to be missed. Ed adored sharing a story and good cheer.

His annual trips to fish the Owens River in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains were legendary. Multiple generations would gather to enjoy Ed’s cooking, stories, and walks to view the stars. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed’s memory to Fisher House, a charity which provides housing for military families while a loved one is receiving care (https://www.
