Obituary of Edward Polanis Mr. Edward S. Polanis a life time resident of Port Jervis died Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. He was 85. He was born September 28, 1932 in Port Jervis, NY the son of the late Stanley Polanis and the late Catherine Rudinski Polanis.
Edward married Elizabeth “Betty Jane” Gray on August 18, 1956 in St. Mary’s RC Church, Port Jervis. They were married for 32 years prior to her death on July 18, 1989. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Edward was a 1949 graduate of Port Jervis High School and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree from Cortland Teachers College in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree from East Stroudsburg University. Edward taught for 28 years at the Port Jervis City School District where he also served as the Athletic Director and was a well respected Port Jervis Red Raiders Football Coach. He was a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Port Jervis; the Knights Of Columbus Council #471, Port Jervis; Port Jervis Elks Lodge No.
645; Port Jervis Country Club often playing with the Goons at Noon. He was also a member of the Roosa Fleming VFW Post #161, Port Jervis and a life member of the Tri-State Naval Ship # 7241, Port Jervis. A family statement read: “Our dad, Ed Polanis, passed peacefully in his sleep with family by his side.
To say we were blessed is an understatement. His love for his family and strong faith will be his legacy. Simply put, Dad loved God, his family, golf, and his many dear friends.
We are all at peace knowing that he is reunited with his one true love, our mom, Betty Jane, and their daughter, Jayne. Thank you to the amazing caregivers who treated our dad with the utmost respect – – to all of you, we are grateful. Rest In Peace, Dad.

William “Billy” Gray & wife Judy and Ray Greiner He is also survived by a host of extended family and good friends who are like family known as the “Ball Street U.S.A. Gang” He was predeceased by his daughter Jayne Marie Polanis and his grandson Joshua Polanis 6 Predeceased Siblings: Helen, Sophie, Millie, Frank, John & Tony He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law Gerald E. Gray, Senator E. Arthur Gray and his wife Helen Hart Gray, and Sister-in-law Rapann Greiner. Visitation at Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Inc. 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 3:00pm – 7:00pm Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 with a 9:00am prayer at the funeral home followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 46 Ball St., Port Jervis with Rev. Matthew Newcomb officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
