Coach Eugene Van Hoose, 75, of Owensboro, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born on October 2, 1942 in Fayetteville, West Virginia to the late James Virgil Van Hoose and Edith Mae Castle Van Hoose. He lived in Paintsville, KY and then moved to Dayton, Ohio where he played all sports; football, basketball, baseball and ran track at Roosevelt High School.

Gene graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Master’s degree in Education. He did his student teaching in Winchester, KY where he obtained his first teaching and coaching job. He taught American History, Driver’s Ed and Physical Ed.

In the 1970’s, he moved to Owensboro where he taught and coached the three major sports at Owensboro High School, football, basketball and baseball. Your Coach loved all you guys in the many years of sports. In baseball, they won two state tournaments.

He had so many great years with all the guys in all the sports until he retired in 1996. He then was asked to help Owensboro Catholic High School with their baseball program and did for a few years. He also loved camping, fishing and boating at our lake place.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Susan L. Van Hoose; two sons, Marcus and Matthew; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many cousins. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, teacher and coach. He had many hats and he filled them well.

He loved God, Jesus and Church and was always a friend to others and ready to help. In his final days, he wanted to go HOME to be free of this body. There will be no services.

James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory are in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, his wishes were to please give to St. John Methodist Church, 2160 Griffith Avenue, Owensboro, KY 42301, Hospice of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301 or your favorite sport teams. Church, family and sports were his life on this earth.

GOD be with my Hoose. I know you are now Home and at Peace. We love you and miss you!
