Obituary for Florance Wanner (Backstrom) Florence Arvida Wanner, age 100, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Normandie Ridge Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late John R. “Big John” Wanner. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karolyn A. Brillhart and a brother, Fred Backstrom.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 6, 1918, daughter of the late Frederick and Florence (Johnson) Backstrom. She spent many summers on her uncle’s farm in upstate New York. Arvida attended Secretarial School and became a secretary for Home Insurance Company in New York City.

After her marriage in 1942, she and John resided in Brooklyn. Upon the birth of their third child, they bought a home in Valley Stream, Long Island where she raised her children. After her husband was transferred by AMF to York in 1968, Arvida became founding member of the Welcome Wagon in 1970.

She enjoyed playing bridge, bingo, and golf. She also loved sewing with the sewing group she started in 1973 called “Stitches”. Following her husband’s retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling across the US and on numerous cruises around the world.

She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and has been residing at Normandie Ridge in York for the last two years. She is survived by her daughter, Arvida L. Wanner of Dover; son, Jack “John F.” Wanner of Charleston, OR; grandson, John R. Wanner; granddaughter, Jennifer Teer and her husband, Chris; four great grandchildren, Evan and Brandon Wanner and Miles and Kara Teer, and numerous nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, great great nieces & nephews, and one great great great nephew. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Normandie Ridge for the care given to their mother during her time there.

A private Celebration of Life service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Normandie Ridge Nursing Home Library, 1700 Normandie Rd. , York, PA 17408 or to the Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Acres Rd.
