Hartzel Lee Marple, 83, of Hackers Creek Rd in Upshur County, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, July 20, 2018 at his home. He was born in Upshur County to the late Cranston Erastus Marple and Maxine Virginia Reger. On April 2, 1955 Hartzel married Mary Frances Taylor who will miss him dearly after 63 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife he was survived by two children: Junior Lee Marple of Parkersburg and Jean Marie Marple Francis and husband Dana, of Horner. He has three grandchildren: Jason Lee Marple and wife, Wendy and great grandson, James Oliver Marple of Allen TX; a granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Marple of Richardson TX, and the youngest granddaughter Ashley Beth Marple Ranson and husband, Eric, of McKinney, TX; three great grandsons: twins, Cash Jackson Ranson and Liam Marshall Ranson, and Gage Michael Ranson; and one sister, Avis Ann Caynor and husband, Woody and two nephews: Robert “Bobby” Warner and wife, Tina, and a great nephew, Seth Warner of Hodgesville, and Christopher Caynor of Clarksburg In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Hattie Sue Warner, and an infant sister, Ida Marie Marple. Hartzel grew up on a farm and bought his first calf and started hauling hay shocks when he was five years old.

He worked on the farm all of his life, got married, and moved to his current location on their wedding day in 1955. He and his dad had a dairy for several years and then he went to work at Moore Business Forms, which was located in Buckhannon. He loved his cows and he also loved his John Wayne movies.

He graduated from Upshur County High School in 1954, and belonged to FFA. He was a member of the Berlin United Methodist Church and served as Trustee. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed.

God must have a small farm with cattle to care for and needed an extra hand, and now he might get to meet John Wayne face-to-face. Friends and family will gather at the Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday from the Pat Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roger McKee officiating. Interment will follow in the Friendship Cemetery in Berlin. The Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored and privileged to serve the family of Hartzel Lee Marple.
