JAMES R. ERTER, 71, of Urbana, passed away Saturday morning, June 23, 2018, following a brief illness. He was born in Springfield on February 7, 1947, the son of the late Richard Stanley and Naomi Ruth (Ater) Erter. He was a graduate of Northeastern High School where he excelled at track and field and held several track records.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jim then worked for Springfield Packaging, retiring after 20 years of service as their head of maintenance and recently retired from Rose City Manufacturing following 20 years of service.

He enjoyed boating, water skiing, snow skiing, billiard tournaments, restoring cars, and riding his motorcycles. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Betty K. (Conner) Erter; two children, Tammy Erter of Bellefontaine and Eric (Nancy) Erter of Springfield; a sister, Phyllis Bageant of Springfield; step-daughter, Tina M. (Eddie) Grooms of Marlow, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Tiffany Adams and Shelby Grooms; and a great grandson, Hunter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Erter.

A time to gather and celebrate Jim’s life will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME (casual attire would be appreciated).
