Joan’s Obituary Joan E. Hughes, 92, formerly of Sharon and Hermitage, passed away on March 21, 2019, in Mechanicsburg, PA, after a long struggle with dementia. Joan was born and raised in Youngstown, OH, by her parents Gwendoline and Arthur Ellway. She was a 1944 graduate of South High School in Youngstown, and prior to her marriage, was employed in the offices of MacKenzie Muffler Company, Youngstown.

In 1947, she married Haydn Hughes, of Sharon, who preceded her in death in 2009. In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by her brothers, Edwin, of Cortland, OH, and Kenneth, of Youngstown, OH. Joan was a long-time, active member of First United Methodist Church of Sharon, and for a time served as church secretary there.

She taught children’s Sunday School classes, belonged to United Methodist Women and the Martha Circle. She was also a member of the Farrell Chapter #156 of the Order of Eastern Star and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. For many years, Joan served on the Election Board in Hermitage.

Joan and her husband were also members of the local AARP Chapter, serving on the Travel Committee. Joan enjoyed interior decorating, reading, and gardening. Her passion and greatest joys were being with and caring for her family.

Joan will live on through a daughter, Devon Betz (husband, Gary) of Mechanicsburg, PA, and a son, David (wife, Vera) of McDonald, PA. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Griffin Betz (wife, Ilana) of Columbia, MD, Ian Hughes (wife, Lindsey) of Pittsburgh, PA, Geoffrey Betz (wife, Amy) of Erie, PA, and Allison Hughes-Bartholow (husband, Tanner) of Seven Fields, PA. In addition, her two great-grandchildren are Graydn and Harper Betz.

She also leaves behind a niece and several nephews. Friends and family are welcome to attend Joan’s graveside funeral service at America’s Cemetery on Monday, March 25th, at 11:00 AM. A memorial service will be conducted later at the convenience of the family.
