Obituary for Joan Gertrude Befort Joan G. Befort, age 88, of Genoa, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, St. Mary’s Campus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 11:00 am at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mazeppa with Father Jonathan Fasnacht officiating.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Mazeppa. Joan Gertrude Jones was born on April 5, 1930 to Frank ‘Ted’ and Leona (Koelsch) Jones at home in Genoa.
She attended Genoa country school and stayed in the area after her schooling. Joan married John Befort on April 10, 1958 at St. Pius Catholic Church in Rochester. They made their home on her family farm in the Douglas area and have remained in Genoa ever since.
She was a homemaker and raised five children. Joan cleaned homes all her life until retiring in 2005. Joan and John loved to travel together, their favorite place being Alaska, and they returned many times to Tucson, AZ.
They loved to go dancing, especially to Polkas. She was always very interested in her grandchildren’s 4-H projects. Joan was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Rochester.
Joan enjoyed cooking, baking, especially pies and popcorn balls, reading, gardening, dancing, and spending time with family. Joan is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John; five children, Christine (Jerry) Ellefson of Oronoco, John Jr. (Terri Espersen) Befort of Byron, Lisa (Steve) Glasrud of Byron, Bill (Melissa Kuehl-Befort) Befort of Pine Island, and Jeff Befort of Kasson; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Frank Mathews, and Lloyd (Zonda) Befort; and sister-in-law, Genelle Kundert. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and a brother.
