Obituary for John C. Ruehl John C. Ruehl 83, of Estero, FL died Sunday, October 28, 2018 after a brief illness. John was born May 15, 1935 in Buffalo, NY a son of the late Francis X. and Margaret J. (née Bebee) Ruehl. He had been a resident of Estero since 2000 coming from Grand Island, NY.
He attended Lafayette High School in Buffalo, NY and at the age of 17 enlisted in the U.S. Navy proudly serving his country for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. In 1957, he became a New York State Trooper where he worked for 28 years before retiring in 1985 as a Captain with the department. On August 22, 1964 he married the love of his life, Shirley A. Burack at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Tonawanda, NY.
John was a faithful Catholic and enjoyed daily Mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Springs where he also served as an Altar Server, Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member and former Grand Knight of St. Leo Council 8877 and currently a member of Our Lady of Light Knights of Columbus Council 10498 and a 4th Degree member of Our Lady of the Rosary Assembly 2542 where he served on the Color Corps. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Shirley A. Ruehl of Estero, FL; two sons, Sean T. Ruehl and his wife, Allison of Durham, NC and Keith J. Ruehl and his wife, Maria of Chicago, IL; two grandsons, Peter Ruehl and Sean Ruehl.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Ellen Sipowicz. The family will be receiving friends on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home 28300 So. Tamiami Tr.
, Bonita Springs. Catholic scripture services will be held at 7:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 9:30 AM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.
At a future date to be determined, a memorial mass will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Tonawanda, NY with interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
