MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI – John H. “Harry” Senkow, Jr., age 73, of Marquette Township, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family. Born December 8, 1944, in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of John H. and Esther (Kearney) Senkow, Sr., Harry was raised in Muskegon and graduated from Muskegon High School, Class of 1962. He was very athletic and showed enough talent when it came to baseball that he was scouted by the Chicago White Sox.

Following… Read More » graduation, Harry enrolled at Muskegon Community College before finishing his education at Western Michigan University, earning a Bachelors Degree in Economics and Government. He did his student teaching in Muskegon and taught in the system for two years. For the next twelve years, he taught in the Wyoming, Michigan school system and, during that time, married the former Sharon Ann Waringa on April 2, 1971.

Harry’s next employment was with ITT where, for 17 years, he served in educational services as a high school coordinator. The position involved much travel around the state, talking to junior and senior high school students concerning the opportunities ITT had to offer in the field of technology. Due to his being on the road most of the time, Harry became acquainted with the Upper Peninsula and, in August 2001, moved to the Marquette area, lured by its friendly people and natural beauty.

For a short time he was employed locally in the Produce Department at Econo Foods. Harry loved the outdoors and all that nature had to offer. Kindhearted, he always had a soft spot for animals, often rescuing injured or stray animals he found along the roadside.

He enjoyed the music of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, classic films, and always maintained a love and fascination with 1960’s-era baseball. However, family was his passion and he was deeply devoted to them. Harry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sharon; his son, Kelly Senkow of Marquette; a sister, Brenda (David) Goryl of Muskegon; brother-in-law, John Waringa of Newaygo; niece and nephews, Rachel Waringa, J.D. Waringa, and Josh Goryl.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents. Harry was a man of humble and unassuming nature, and would probably not sanction even this much of an obituary. However, he was a teacher and imparted life’s lessons to those he taught in class and by example.

Even this brief sketch of his life is a lesson in a life well lived. He will be missed! A private family celebration of Harry’s life will be held.
