John’s Obituary Pete fell on April 5, 2019, and was hospitalized with serious problems until his death on May 20, 2019. He was born on August 16, 1927 to John Wilson Grant and Jettie Hester in Ramer, Alabama. He graduated from Autaugaville High School and joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific/China during World War II.
His work career began at an early age when he delivered groceries on his bicycle in the quaint little Alabama town. After leaving the Navy, he was a lineman for the Southern Division of Western Union. He dismantled high lines throughout the southern states including civil war battle grounds.
He moved to Texas to become associated with a new family-owned business, Pinecrest Laundry and Dry Cleaners and remained there until it closed. For a short period of time he operated a back yard greenhouse providing wholesale plants for large greenhouses. He then joined Richard Ellis at the Marshall Pottery to create the greenhouse division and ultimately became manager of Marshall Pottery’s Old World Store.
He retired to his Caddo Lake home in Uncertain, Texas, where he worked with Fred Peterson at Motor Supply Warehouse. After this long and varied work history, he loved taking care of his acreage and mowing with his tractor. A small herd of deer arrived each afternoon to greet him and eat the corn.
He married Dorothy Prothro on July 22, 1949. They had two boys, John Wilson Grant III and Paul Winston Grant. Always interested in their activities, he served as a Little League coach and Scout Master.
He was also an adult leader of the Episcopal Young Churchman at Trinity Episcopal Church. At the time of his death he was a member and congregation leader at the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Leigh, TX. His other memberships during his life time were Elks Club, Masonic Lodge, and dance clubs.
He was an avid duck and deer hunter and an expert bass fisherman and loved Caddo Lake. His amateur radio call sign WA5EDR will be retired. As a HAM, he assisted during a hurricane evacuation of the Houston area in the 1960’s when there was no other communications.
He grieved the death of family members: son John W. Grant III, in-laws Mac and Frances Prothro, his Mother Jettie, and father John. He also grieved the loss of many close friends that died far too soon, i.e., Moses King, Bert Wood, Jack Ramsey, Pete Hughes, Franklin Jones and countless others. He is survived by the love of his life of 69 years, his son Paul, daughter-in-law Almedia and their 3 daughters and husbands, and 3 grandsons, one great grandson and one great, great granddaughter and many close friends that he cherished.
Pete’s life was well lived, and he enjoyed every day of 91+ years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Humane Society of Harrison County – The Pet Place, a favorite of Pete’s. Services will be provided by Downs Funeral Home.
Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
