Obituary for Larry Barnes Larry Barnes, 80, of Grand Island passed away on July 4, 2018 at CHI-Health St. Francis. Celebration of Life graveside services for friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Grand Island City Cemetery. Dan Naranjo will officiate.

All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Lawrence “Larry” Barnes was born in Ord, Nebraska on January 31, 1938 to Ellis (Pete) and Marie (Maquire) Barnes. The family moved to Central City where he attended country school.

He graduated from Central City High School in 1956. He enlisted in the Army in 1958. He was discharged in March of 1961.

While in the service he worked construction. In 1961 he began his lifelong bricklaying trade. He worked for John Janulewicz as an apprentice bricklayer and then earned his bricklayer certificate.

He married Lorraine Hilder in 1961. They made their home in Grand Island. In 1971 he and Lorraine formed Lawrence Barnes Masonry.

Larry was very dedicated and modestly managed his crew with the help of Terry Jakubowski while Lorraine was the bookkeeper. He built many beautiful buildings including the Central City Library, several hotels and their home. Larry subcontracted for Lacy construction, Tri Valley and Sampson construction.

He retired in 2007. Larry loved to travel and enjoyed reading. He received his love of reading from his mother.

Larry loved to read about our country’s history and specially WWII along with any battle history. Out of his five brothers four served in the military and Larry was always thinking of ways to honor their service to the country. Larry loved spending time with his grandson Cirrus; longtime close friend, Don Hall; and his fur buddy Winston.

Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine, his daughter Michelle Barnes and her special friend Dan Middleton, grandson Shane Willmert and his wife Beckie; granddaughters Amanda White and Emily and Katie Barnes; great grandson Cirrus White; his brother Bob and his wife Carol; sister in laws, Luetta Barnes, Mary Ann Barnes and Virginia Barnes; brother in law Bob Hilder and his wife Judy; sister in law Deb Hilder. He was a member of the Platt Deutsch and the American Legion #53. Larry was preceded in death by brothers: Gerry, Earl, Don and Derrell.

Sisters: Margaret Nelson, Patricia Beaver and Helen Geisenhagen; sister in laws: Betty Rutherford and Patty Steele; brother in law Kenneth Hilder; grandchildren: Joshua, Zoe, Audrey and Nevaeh.
