Obituary for Lawrence Schmidt Lawrence “Larry” Schmidt, 97, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Larry was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1921, the son of Francis and Irene Criswell Schmidt of Kittanning, PA. When his country called upon him for service during World War II, Larry faithfully responded and on January 28, 1943, he was inducted into the US Navy where he served aboard the USS LST-646 Class Tank Landing Ship in the Pacific Theater.
He was subsequently discharged with honors on February 8, 1946. Larry graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and taught for 30 years at Graham School in Conneaut Twp. Before he and his wife Jeanne retired to Charlotte, NC, in 1983.
He was a lifetime member of the Pymatuning Sportsman Club and several Teacher Associations. And while he enjoyed many things in life, most special to him was time spent with family and friends, even more so when he was riding around in his golf cart, and he will be greatly missed. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Jeanne; a son, Eric (wife Renee) Schmidt; two daughters: Kaethe (husband Jim) Alley and Lysa Schmidt; 3 grandsons, 7 great grandchildren and 3 nephews.
He is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Larry’s family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. Friends are welcome to join with the family for a visitation from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, January 4, 2019, at the funeral home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105.
A memorial service honoring the life, love and blessing of this wonderful man will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 pm on Saturday, January 5. Inurnment to take place at Christ Lutheran Church columbarium. Please take a moment to visit Larry’s Tribute Wall and leave a favorite memory of Larry or a condolence to the family.
