Mary Alice Hayes was born on February 14th, 1932 in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Pecola Spearman and Henry Hayes.

Mary Alice came to New York City in 1952. She carried her traits with her. She was the news holder of the family.

If you didn’t want your business to be told then don’t tell Big Momma, because once she grabbed the house phone the conversation would last for hours with laughs and her own opinions. She never held her tongue and she was well known for telling it like it was. Along with her many talents she was a master chef in the kitchen.

She could make with her eyes closed any dish. Some of the family favorites were baked macaroni and cheese, collard greens, oxtails and a mean coconut cake. Between Diane, Barbara, Shirley, Bear and Winnie none of her children has mastered how to make her famous red rice.

Mary is predeceased by three children, O’Neil Flow, June Flow, and Raquel Hayes; stepdaughter, Essie Louise Lowe; two sisters, Elizabeth Butler and Betty Parks; one brother, Alfred Spearman (Sonny); and her companion in life, George Evans. She leaves behind: four daughters, Diane Dames, Barbara Dames, Shirley Hayes and Winifred Hayes; one son, Tyrone Hayes; sonsin- law, Gregory Dames and Nathaniel Dames; grandchildren, Leroy (Boom), James, Azure, Qulesha, Shonte, Sabrina, Keisha and Rebecca; and many more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren too many to name; two sisters, Helen Collins and Lillie Pippersburg; and a host of other family and friends.
