Obituary for Mary Jane (Niedner) Fletcher Mary Jane (Niedner) Fletcher, 94, of New Britain, passed away Wednesday (July 11, 2018) at Jerome Home. She was predeceased by three husbands, Walter R. Fletcher, Jr., DMD; James R. McCausland and John T. Mason. Born in Melrose, Mass, Mary Jane grew up in Malden, Massachusetts.

She attended Malden High School and then graduated from Colby Junior College as a medical technician in New London, New Hampshire. She married Walter R. Fletcher Jr. on April 27, 1946. They lived in Japan while he served in the US Navy as a Dentist from 1946-1948.

It was there that Mary Jane developed a keen interest in Japanese art and flower arranging. After returning to the United States they moved to New Britain, Connecticut where Walter established his dental practice. They lived in Kensington and then Southington where they raised their three children.

Mary Jane was extremely creative, an accomplished artist, seamstress, knitter, needle pointer and flower arranger. She was a generous, loving, encouraging mother and grandmother; always keenly interested in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments. She was a volunteer at the YWCA, the Red Cross as a blood bank captain for over 20 years, and the Hillstead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut.

Mary Jane was a former long time member of Kensington Congregational Church and was recently a affiliated with First Lutheran Church in New Britain. She was also a member of the New Britain Garden Club (President 2 years), New Britain Museum of American Art (Women’s Committee) and a member of the Junior League in New Britain, CT, Savannah, GA and Hilton Head, SC. She enjoyed tennis, sailing, skiing and traveling.

Mary Jane and Walter traveled extensively in the US and abroad. They enjoyed family time at Shuttle Meadow Country Club, time in Vermont and especially at Bashan Lake in East Haddam, CT. Mary Jane and Walter were blessed with a wide circle of friends and family.

Surviving is a son, Bruce T. Fletcher, DMD and his wife Kris of New Britain; a daughter, Bonnie McCausland and her husband Peter of Hobe Sound, FL; four grandchildren, Andrew Fletcher and his wife Mariana and their children, William and Luke; Sarah Meaney and her husband Doug and their son Grayson; Christopher McCausland and his wife Kristina and their son Tanner; and Elizabeth Salata and her husband Kyle and their son James; a brother, Charles Niedner of Vero Beach, FL; a sister, Gloria Niedner Dattman of Hingham, Mass; and a daughter in law, Anne (Kuhn) Fletcher also of Hingham. Six years ago, Mary Jane lost her 62 year old son, Craig A. Fletcher. Funeral service are Tuesday (July 17, 2018) 11:30 AM at Kensington Congregational Church, 312 Percival Avenue, Kensington, CT 06037.

The calling hours will begin at 10:30 at the Kensington Congregational Church. A reception will follow at Shuttle Meadow Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 77 Franklin Square, New Britain, 06051 or the Kensington Congregational Church.
