Matthew Naab of New Haven died July 19, 2018 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born in Cheboygan, Michigan, July 1, 1951, son of the late Captain Joseph W. Naab Jr. and Elizabeth Stromberg Naab. He graduated from St. Bernard Boys’ High School in Montville and from Cornell University School of Agriculture.

He grew up in many places, as his father was transferred to new duty stations, but the constant place in his early life was the family’s cottage in South Freeport, Maine. Gardening was Matthew’s calling. He worked in the New Haven Parks Department as a horticulturalist, lovingly tending the Pardee Rose Garden in Edgerton Park.

Every year he and his crew planted the flowers lining the center of State Street. People were constantly stopping to photograph his work. He also cared for many of the flowers and plantings in his Court Street neighborhood and helped his many friends with their gardens.

For many years, Matthew oversaw a group of greenhouse volunteers planting seeds for flowers to be transplanted in New Haven Community Gardens & Parks. He loved small animals, from his childhood pet beagle, Chester, to the many stray cats he rescued. Loving, caring and considerate, Matthew was both a gentleman and a gentle man.

He is survived by his life partner, Diane Abalan, and brothers, Geoffrey (Joan) Naab, Christopher (Elizabeth) Naab, Michael (Diane) Naab, Jonathan (Betty Dong) Naab, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Naab. A Memorial service will be held in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place in New Haven Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

Relatives and friends may call from 1:00pm until time of service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to The Greater New Haven Cat Project, Inc or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
