Obituary of Melvin Rose Melvin J. Rose, age 97, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Schuyler Hospital. Melvin was born March 31, 1921 in Scranton, PA. He was the son of the late John Rose and Fanny (Lowenstein) Rose.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Laura (Wilson) Rose and his second wife, Dorothy (Gordon) Rose; his brothers, Elbern and John Rose. Melvin is survived by his brother, Carl Rose of Philipsburg, NJ; three children: Steven (Christine) Rose of Beaver Dams, NY, Bonnie (Lawrence) Baker of Beaver Dams, NY, James (Joan) Rose of Beaver Dams, NY; grandchildren: Steven (Alexis) Rose of Tampa, FL, Todd (Sarah) Baker of Big Flats, NY, Laura (Desmond) Roeback of Erie, PA, Frank (Brooke) Rose of Belchertown, MA, and Ellen (Christopher) Morris of Winter Garden, FL; great grandchildren: Derek, Aidenn, Ava Rose, Samuel and Seth Roeback, Nathan and Alyssa Morris, along with many nieces and nephews. Melvin served in the Army during WWII, Headquarters Company 1st Battalion, 362nd Infantry Regiment, 91st Division.

He served in the infantry reconnaissance platoon. Melvin retired in 1985 from Corning Glass Works – In June 2016 he received his 75-year service award. He had beef cattle, honey bees, and enjoyed gardening – there wasn’t anything he could not grow.

He and his wife, Dorothy, started selling vegetables in Painted Post before the Farmers Market became popular. He was well known for his great garlic, and used to spend many hours keeping his garden weed free. He has always loved to hunt and fish – sharing many stories with his family and friends.

In his latter years, he was no longer able, but still enjoyed listening to stories of those who could. Melvin was the oldest member of the community of Monterey and will be missed. Special thanks to the nursing staff at Schuyler Hospital for their dedicated care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Monterey Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter’s Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St. Corning, NY on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. A funeral service will immediately follow with Rev.
