Obituary of Douglas Gerow Douglas L. Gerow, 82, of Painted Post, left this life to be with his wife Emma on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, after receiving injuries in an auto accident. Doug was born in Corning on October 9, 1936 to the late Maylon and Charlotte (Edger) Gerow. He proudly served two stints in the United States Marine Corps, receiving Honorable Discharges in 1956 & 1962.

SEMPER FI. On August 19, 1957, he married the love of his life, Emma Crawford, in a double wedding with Emma’s brother, Carl and Roberta (Clark) Crawford. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before Emma’s passing in September of last year.

For many years, Doug worked two and three jobs at a time, including managing his own backhoe and dump truck businesses, doing well work for his brother, Gordon, working at the Box Factory, and driving cab. He did everything to give his family a better life. In March of 1967, Doug began his career as a Callman for the City of Corning Fire Department, becoming a full time employee in November of that year.

On November 1, 1972 he was proudly promoted to lieutenant, a position he held until his retirement on August 20, 1989, having 22 1/2 years of service. He enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow firefighters and still enjoyed the monthly breakfast gatherings with the retired firefighters. He was also a lifetime member of the Campbell American Legion and the Corning VFW.

Doug and Emma also owned and operated Gerow’s Grocery and the original Country Pub on Meads Creek Road from 1976-1988. They sold their businesses to then enjoy retirement and winter in Florida for many years. They enjoyed many cruises & trips with family and friends, and sitting on the porch enjoying the weather and visiting with everyone.

In addition to his parents, Doug was predeceased by his wife Emma, brothers Richard (Shirley) and Gordon (Joyce), and sisters Marie McChesney (Bob), Patricia (Marvin), and Greta Roberts. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his sons Maylon (Mike) (Cynthia) Gerow of Painted Post, Scott (Melody) Gerow of Painted Post, daughters Tracey (James) Fassett of Corning, Kelly (Joseph) English of Bradford, sister Maylonda (Albert) Elliott, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and MANY nieces and nephews, in-laws, neighbors and friends. As per his wishes there will be no services.
