Obituary of Mary Ellen Galvin Mary Ellen Galvin, age 81, formerly of Steuben Street in Painted Post, NY died on Saturday, November 10, 2018 in her new home at Appleridge Senior Living in Horseheads. Mary Ellen was born on October 20, 1937 in Bridgeville, PA to James and Mary (Fullerton) Cavanaugh. She graduated from Bridgeville High School in Bridgeville, PA and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh as a Registered Nurse (1958).

She started her nursing career at Washington Hospital Center, and married Robert Galvin on May 28, 1960 in Washington DC. In 1963 she and her husband moved to Corning, Bob’s hometown. At various times she took continuing education classes at Catholic University in Washington, DC and, as she raised her family, at Corning Community College and Elmira College.

Mary Ellen worked as a nurse in the area in many capacities and retired as a contract nurse with Independent Nursing. Mary Ellen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed cross stitch, always stitching her initials, “MEG”, into her many creations, angel collecting, crossword puzzles, and watching Masterpiece Theatre and NCIS with her family.

She was a Volunteer with the Junior Womens Club, The American Red Cross, The Girl Scouts, and at WHS with her childrens’ many extracurricular activities. She was a long-time parishioner of All Saints Parish and Saints Isadore & Maria Torribia Parish. Mary Ellen loved to travel, going on 11 cruises, visiting all 50 states, and many countries.

She and Bob shared some of these adventures with dear friends and family, and trips to Ocean City, MD and Carolina Beach, NC provided especially wonderful memories. Mary Ellen was very dedicated to her family and provided many treasured experiences and memories to her children and grandchildren. Mary Ellen met challenges with remarkable resilience, fortitude, and grace, all while providing ongoing support to many in her extended family.

She is survived by her husband Robert; three daughters, Mary Pat Galvin of Corning, Maureen Galvin of Chapel Hill, NC, and Katie Galvin of Chicago, IL; son, John Galvin of Corning; brothers, Daniel (Joan) Cavanaugh of NC and Lt. Col. James (Linda) Cavanaugh of AR; grandchildren, Megan, Danny, Matthew, McKenna, Topher, and Sara; great grandchildren, Skylar, Karleigh, and Camden; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 at St. Mary’s Church, 155 State Street in Corning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Corning.
