Mildred “Milly” Millicent Otto Carey, 95, of Anderson, was reunited in Heaven with her Lord and loved ones on March 17, 2019. She passed away peacefully after a very brief illness. Milly was born April 15, 1923 in Anderson to George and Myrtle Otto.

A graduate of Anderson High School, she worked at General Motors for a few years before becoming a full-time wife and mother. “Nan,” as her family lovingly called her, was the glue and the spirit of her family. Many lives were enriched by her quick wit and funny sense of humor, the twinkle in her eye as she teased and playfully enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She raised two wonderful sons, and generously helped raise seven other grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Nan delighted in spending time with family, and no one loved the Pacers or Colts and Andrew Luck more. She rarely missed a Pacer game on television.

She loved playing cards and kept her mind sharp and clear throughout her life by tackling difficult crossword puzzles. Nan had a great appreciation for birds of all kinds, particularly Cardinals, and enjoyed watching them from her screened-in porch and noting when the first robins arrived in the spring. Even though Nan never had a driver’s license, she learned how to drive a golf cart at age 81 and loved taking her great-grandkids for rides around the property, showing them how to feed the fish in her pond.

Milly married Don Carey on July 5, 1946 and they enjoyed 64 years together before his passing on March 2, 2010. She and Don were members of Markleville North Christian Church. She was a member of Eastern Star.

Milly is survived by her sons: Ron (Wilma) Carey and Rick (Marlene) Carey of Anderson; grandchildren: Tina Durbin of Pensacola Florida; Chad (Carrie) Carey of Middletown; Cayla (Adam) Truman of Pendleton; Stephanie (Casey) Maher of Muncie; and Kelly (Travis) Silvers of Lynnwood, Washington; great-grandchildren: Riley Durbin of Pensacola, Florida; Zane Carey and Carson Carey of Middletown; Acelyn Truman and Beckett Truman of Pendleton; Connor Maher of Columbus, Ohio; Payton Maher of Muncie; Quinn Kurowia, Felicity Silvers and Ian Silvers of Lynnwood, Washington. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Clarice Sholty of Anderson; special friends: Marilyn and Maureen Reynolds of Anderson; Marsha Trindel Noller of Pensacola, Florida; Steve (Betty) Knapp of Markleville, whom she considered a third son; and several nieces and nephews. In particular, she was close to niece, Judy Laughlin of Anderson, who spent a lot of time with her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six siblings: brothers, George, Charles and John Otto and sisters, Mary Hanson, Elizabeth Millner, and Margaret Huffman. Visitation will be Sunday, March 24 from 1 to 3:30 pm at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson. Services will be Sunday, March 24 at 3:30 pm at the funeral home, with Rev.

John Hackney officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Ovid.

Milly loved children and was concerned that some couldn’t afford school lunches. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to help these children in East Elementary of South Madison Community Schools Corporation. Make checks payable to SMCSC Nutritional Services and mail to 203 South Heritage Way, Pendleton, IN 46064.
