Richard Nelson Smith, 82, of Connersville, passed away peacefully at his home early Tuesday morning, January 8, 2019. One of three sons of Walter and Ethel Himelick Smith, Richard was born in Connersville on April 6, 1936. Following his graduation from Brookville High School, Richard continued his education at Indiana University School of Business and earned his Law Degree from Indiana University School of Law in 1960.

On June 4, 1960, Richard married the former Marilyn Maule in Richmond, Indiana. Mrs. Smith survives. As an attorney, Richard practiced family law including criminal law work and estate planning.

He served as a prosecutor in both Brookville and Connersville and was Connersville City Attorney for many years. Richard practiced law briefly in Brookville and in Connersville from 1962 until his retirement. He was proud to receive authorization to present legal cases before both the Indiana State Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court.

Richard was a member of First United Methodist Church where he volunteered at the church health clinic. He was also a member of many civic organizations including the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Free & Accepted Masons, Loyal Order of Moose, Whitewater Valley Arts Association, and Connersville Kiwanis Club where he was past president. An avid artist, Richard enjoyed woodworking, painting, and sculpting.

He also enjoyed spending time with his family. Besides his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Smith, survivors include two children, Brian (Tracie) Smith and Rachel Smith; three grandchildren, Austin Spradlin, Cailin and Brodin Smith; a brother, Don (Elaine) Smith; a sister-in-law, Patricia Smith; several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Smith.

Family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Reverend Frank Oakman will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitewater Valley Arts Association or Parkinson’s Foundation, and friends may visit online anytime at millermosterrobbins.com.
