Obituary for Ronnie W. Matthews Putnam County Circuit Clerk Ronnie W. Matthews, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington following complications of heart surgery. He was born August 22, 1952 in Charleston, a son of the late Alvin Guy and Sylvia Bowcott Matthews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bob, Joe and Billy Matthews; father and mother-in-law, Mervin and Ruth Gibson.
Growing up in Nitro and being educated in Nitro schools, Ronnie was a well-known businessman in Putnam and Kanawha counties including having owned and operated Winfield Hardware for many years. He served his community on various boards and councils as well as being part of the Chapman Funeral Home family. He was elected as Putnam County Circuit Clerk in 2008.
He will be remembered for his humor and his involvement with the Republican Party on the local, state and national levels. He was a member of the Kanawha Valley Masonic Lodge, # 36 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and continued to honor his fellow service members as an integral part of the James Marshall American Legion Post # 187, Winfield.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Gibson Matthews; sons, Duke Matthews (Ivanna) of Houston, TX, Dustin Guy Matthews of Las Vegas; sister, Sharon Skeens of Nitro; brother, Harold Matthews of Nitro; and his grandson, Adam. Funeral service will be 2pm Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial with Military Honors by James Marshall American Legion Post # 187 and Masonic Rites by Kanawha Valley Lodge # 36 AF & AM will follow in the Bowcott Cemetery, Pliny, WV.
