CENTERVILLE-Roy Montgomery Gibson, 71, passed away on June 3, 2018, peacefully in his sleep. Roy was born November 9, 1946 in Ogden, UT, son of Jay Hunter Gibson and Alta Montgomery. He grew up in West Weber, moving with his family to Nyssa, at age 11.
He learned what it meant to work hard by helping with the family farm. He was Student Body President at Nyssa High School, graduating in 1965. After high school, Roy served an LDS Mission, spending two years on an Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Upon finishing his service, he returned to Ogden to attend Weber State College. While on summer break, he learned through a friend that a “house full of babes” had moved into Nyssa, so he figure he’d better check it out! And there he met our mom (definitely out of his league), the absolute love of his life, Marlene Bair.
They were married on March 18, 1969, in the Logan LDS Temple. They had three impressive children, Melanie Fairchild of Kaysville, Jaren (Stephanie) Gibson of West Jordan, and Leah (Todd) Clark of Farmington. They were married for 45 wonderful years before Marlene’s passing in 2014.
Shortly after getting married, Roy was drafted into the Army, serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. Roy was honorably discharged and he, Marlene and their new daughter, Melanie, returned to Ogden. Roy then began his 30-year civilian service career in Computer Programing working at Hill Air Force Base.
Once retired, the fun really started. Roy and Marlene loved to travel and would find any excuse to leave their adult children behind and explore the world. They’ve been to Thailand, Bali, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Australia; and all we got were airport knickknacks.
After that fun was over, they decided to get back to the service they loved wtih the LDS Church, and served two full-time missions together. The first mission was at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City, working as Senior Missionary Coordinators in the Welfare Office. After that, they were called to the Germany Berlin Mission, where they worked in the mission office, returning home in Aug 2013.
Roy had a knack for making you laugh; always ready with quick wit, a dad joke, or just a good story. If you met Roy, you were now a friend, and hopefully a golfing buddy, as that was his favorite hobby. He had a wonderful ability to find a way to relate to anyone, whether they were 90 years old or 4.
Roy is survived by his three children, and two siblings: Glen (Diane) Gibson and Jay (Janet) Gibson; along with his 12 grandchildren Tori (Stu) Smedley, Tess Fairchild, Hannah, Bennett, Hallie, Maren, Elissa, Bryn, Claira and Bethany Gibson, and Taylor and Mia Clark, and one great-granddaughter, Macie. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brothers Monte, Ross and Don Gibson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the Centerville North Stake Center, 1461 N. Main St., Centerville, UT 84014.
Friends may visit with family at a viewing which will be held at the Myers Mortuary, 250 North Fairfield Rd. , Layton, UT 84041 on Friday, June 8, 2018 from 6-8 PM and prior to services from 8:30-9:30 AM at the church. Interment will be at the West Weber Cemetery.
