Ruth Ray Bailey Gibbs, age 100, departed this life on June 6, 2018, at the home of her son, Donald Gibbs, in Fletcher, N.C. She was born in Erwin, TN, on September 29, 1917, to Yancey County residents Zula Mae Byrd and Willard Whittington Ray. Soon after her birth, the family returned to Jacks Creek, settling near the old Day Book Post Office (near Clearmont School).

She was an employee of Glen Raven Mills in Burnsville; completed cosmetology training in Asheville, and practiced in Burnsville; was a hair stylist for major hotel-casinos in Las Vegas; and a costume designer for Hallelujah Hollywood Productions in Las Vegas.

She was under home care by Four Seasons Hospice of Flat Rock, NC.
