Obituary for Samuel Hess Mr. Samuel Clarence Hess, age 95, of the Long Branch section of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Sunday (June 24, 2018) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born September 28, 1922 in Russell County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Otis Winerd and Ida Catherine Stevens Hess. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Freewill Baptist faith.

A veteran of the United States Army, he had proudly served during World War II. He was a retired coal miner and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Mary Thelma Perkins Hess, one son, Winfred Allen Hess, one grandson, David Allen Hess, three great-grandchildren, Katelyn Simerly, Jason Rasnake, and Caleb Hess, three brothers, Dingus Hess, Albert Hess, and James Hess, and five sisters, Jettie Dye, Ruth Hubbard, Venia Hubbard, Renia Perkins, and Della Hess.

Survivors include three children, Lee Hess and wife, Debbie of Swords Creek, Ellie Kiser of Swords Creek, and Carol Tiller and husband, Robert of Bee; special son-at-heart, Doug Dye; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Ray, Regina Dye, Michelle Vance, Joshua Hess, Rebecca Gillespie, Timothy Tiller, Melissa Stinson, Michelle Edwards, and Trina Hess; twelve great-grandchildren, Kadance Hess, Corey Ray, Lilli Ray, Matthew Simerly, Brianna Vance, Bryson Vance, William Hess, Chassity Tiller, Tiffany Onate, Hunter Hess, Jared Edwards, and Nicky Wakefield; two brothers, Carl Hess of Ohio and Kyle “Monk” Hess of Swords Creek; two sisters, Mavis Hubbard and Goldie Dye both of Swords Creek; five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. David Perkins, Rev.

Tommy Dye, and Rev. Robert Tiller officiating. Interment will follow in the Otis Hess Cemetery at Swords Creek, Virginia.

Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Joshua Hess, Timothy Tiller, Corey Ray, Matthew Simerly, Bryson Vance, Jimmy Dye, Eric Hubbard, and Doug Dye. Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Dye, Wayne Vance, and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Tuesday, where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM.
