Obituary for Thomas John Serdula Thomas John Serdula, 73, of Matthews, NC, died August 28, 2018, in Matthews. Tom was born in Corning, New York, on June 1, 1945, the son of John and Helen Bohoy Serdula. After school, he answered his country’s call to service and served in the United States Marine Corps until his honorable discharge on February 6, 1968.

He went to work for New York Telephone where he started as a lineman and went on to become a contract reviewer. In December of 1969, he married the love of his life, Ms Sylvia Edsall, and would have celebrated 49 years of marriage this December. In 2004, he and Sylvia moved to Charlotte where they have been residents since.

Tom enjoyed many things in life. He loved to travel and being around water, both boating and swimming. But if you knew Tom, you knew what his real love in life was, other people.

He was quite the talker and was the quintessential representative of the “never met a stranger” line. He enjoyed making friends and loved spending time with family. He was quick with his wit, long in his stories and genuine in his laughter.

Tom will truly be missed by those who were blessed to meet and befriend him. Tom is survived by his wife, Sylvia; a son, Todd (wife Michelle) Serdula of Charlotte and their daughter, Grace; and a daughter, Krista (husband Chet) Tuttle of Fuquay Varina, NC, and their children Hayden, Halle and Harper. Tom is further survived by his sister, Carole (husband Gary) Herrlich of Corning, NY; and by numerous other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steve. Anyone who knew Tom knew how active he was with the Levine Senior Center in Matthews. He and Sylvia took part in many Spaghetti Dinners there on Thursdays.

In honor of him, friends are welcome to join with the family for food and fellowship in the community room of the Levine Senior Center on Thursday, September 6th, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. If you feel so moved, please bring your favorite story or memory of Tom to share with the family and all present. Honoring his military service, interment will take place with Marine Corps honors at the Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date.
