Vada Lester Ratliff Charles, age 81 of North Tazewell, VA died Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born May 17, 1937 at McDowell Co., WV and was a daughter of the late Cloyd Lester and Chloe Dales Lester Blankenship. Mrs. Charles loved spoiling her grandchildren, who were proud to call her mom-maw.

She really enjoyed sharing stories of her life and childhood and spending time with her caregiver and special “Angel” Shari McGuire. She was a loving lady who would give the food off her table or from her cupboards to help someone who was in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Boyd Blankenship; husband, Allen Ratliff; daughter, Die-alma “Patty” Duty; sister, Hazel Brown. Those who survive to cherish her memories include four grandchildren, Heather Smith and fiancé, Carl “Scooby” Davis of Tazewell, VA, Robert Fowlkes and wife, Sarah of Grundy, VA, Angie McGuire, who was also her caregiver, and husband, Mark of North Tazewell, VA and Jeff Duty of Amonate, VA; four great-grandchildren, Charisma “Doodle Bug” Smith, Janesa Harris, Brooklyn Fowlkes and Kailee Smith; two sisters, Denver Bowles of North Carolina and Sadie Stiltner of Virginia; four brothers, Olen Lester of West Virginia, Posey Lester and Howard Lester, both of Virginia and Hershel Lester of Paynesville, WV; several nieces; nephews; other family members and friends also survive. Funeral Services for Mrs. Charles will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Lisa Haywood officiating.

Burial will follow at the Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl “Scooby” Davis, Frankie Hicks and Darrell Hicks.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 p.m. (noon) Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell, VA is serving the family of Mrs. Charles and those wishing to express sympathy online may do so at www. hurstscottfuneralhomes.com.
