Wilfred’s Obituary Wilfred Willert, 91, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday January 29, 2019 at Minot Health and Rehab. Wilfred Farrell Willert was born July 6, 1927, the son of Carl and Edna (Curtis) Willert, in Grand Forks County, ND. He was raised and educated in Thompson and Grand Forks, ND.
He graduated from Thompson High School in 1946. After graduation he took up farming near Thompson, with his brother, Charles. Wilfred enlisted in the United States Army in July of 1946.
He proudly served his country while stationed at Sagomo Prison in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Wilfred was united in marriage to Sarah Jean Zimmerman December 29, 1953, in Fargo, ND.
The couple spent 60 plus years together. Sarah passed away October 31, 2014. Following his military service, Wilfred attended college at the University of North Dakota, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1960.
He worked for the John Deere Company for 20 years in Minot in the area of Credit Services. This included many years of traveling throughout ND and MT. He returned to Grand Forks and managed Midland Fertilizer Plant and then moved to West Fargo where he managed Seed Tech Seed Company.
Wilfred retired in 1986 and spent time in West Fargo, ND and Minot. Many busy and happy times were spent enjoying time with family. Wilfred and Sarah were great caretakers of their grandchildren, and grandpa was always up for a hockey game, basketball game or a dance recital.
Wilfred and Sarah enjoyed their yearly camping trips to Glacier National Park. Wilfred was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church of Minot. He was active in support of the MAYSA Arena and was an avid Hockey Booster, being inducted into the Hockey Booster Hall of Fame.
He was also a member of the Elks Club, American Legion and Kiwanis. His loving family includes: Daughter, Susan K. (Gary) DeGooyer, Great Falls, MT; son, John C. (Lori) Willert, Minot; grandchildren, Donald DeGooyer and Sarah DeGooyer both of Denver, CO, and Jordan (Kaitlin) Willert and Molly Willert, both of Minot; great-grandchild, Foster Willert; brother-in-law, Don C. (Audrey) Zimmerman, Waite Park, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Wilfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sarah; brother, Charles Willert; and sisters, Lilah (Earl) Steenerson and Lily Tweet.
Memorial Service: Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, ND. Interment: Thompson Cemetery, Thompson, ND, in the spring of 2019. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register book on Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
