Josephine “Joy”‘s Obituary Josephine “Joy” Marie Paetz, 87, of Minot died on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Trinity Hospital while surrounded in love by her children and grandchildren. Joy was born on February 5, 1932 in Elbowoods, North Dakota, the daughter of George William Grinnell and Maggie (Old Dog) Grinnell. She was of Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara descent.

Josephine belonged to the Prairie Chicken Clan and Child of Dripping Dirt Clan. She was a fluent speaker of that Hidatsa language. Josephine was known to her family and friends as Joy.

She received her nursing training at North Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, California and later returned to Minot and worked at Trinity Hospital. Joy graduated from Minot State University with honors in 1985 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. She worked at Quentin N. Burdick Job Corps Center and retired in 2005.

Joy loved to sew and made many beautiful shawls that she would enter into the Minot State Fair. She spent most of her life in Minot, the city that she loved. She always said that Minot was woven with friends she came to know, and Minot was her home.

She loved going to the mall and shops and greeting people with her friendly warm smile. Joy is preceded in death by her mother, Maggie (Old Dog) Grinnell, father, George Grinnell, Sr.; son, Raymond Paetz; sisters, Cecila Grinnell, Inez Bird Bear, Rita Abe, Regina Grinnell and Perpetua “Pat” Fox; and her brothers, Richard Grinnell, Benjamin Grinnell and George Grinnell, Jr. Joy’s loving family includes her children: Karen Paetz, PhD, North Dakota, Theodore (Linda) Paetz, California, Teresa (Rick) Rakoczy, Minnesota, Hyler (Angie) Howard, Arizona and Joy Marie (Brian) Dixon, Idaho. She had 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews whom she referred to as her own sons and daughters and their children as her grandchildren. Her family was a of strength and love that drove her in life. She never forgot a birthday or a special day in her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s life.

She always remembered them by sending cards to mark their special occasion. Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, February 11, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: Sunday from 2 – 5 p.m. followed by a Vigil Prayer Service and Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
