Obituary for William Gerent Jr. William Gerent, Jr., 72, of New Britain, husband of Katherine (Srogi) Gerent, passed away Saturday (April 21, 2018) at the Hospital of Central CT. A native and lifelong New Britain resident, he was son of the late William Gerent Sr. and Helen (Stepash) Gerent. A graduate of E.C. Goodwin Technical School, he served his apprenticeship at B Johns.
He spent over 25 years at Stanley Works as a Tool and Die maker and also served as a Union Steward. He remained an active member of the Union. After leaving Stanley Works, he also worked at several small shops including Admill Machine Co. where he retired in 2012.
Bill was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He was always very active. Starting as an Altar server, then going on to teach Church School and also a Church Council member where he was on both the Maintenance and Cemetery Committees.
He also dedicated his time to many other church activities from Bread Baking and Varenyky Making to Plowing. Bill was a dedicated family man. To him, there was nothing more important than taking care of and spending time with loved ones.
However, he still found time to do the things he loved. In his youth he loved to ride his motorcycle. He spent many years on the Stanley Men’s Duckpin Bowling League.
Every spring through summer he could be found in his back yard tending to his vegetable garden or tinkering with one of his vehicles. In winter he plowed for many friends. No matter how busy he was, he always found time to help a friend (or stranger) in need.
Bill was always ready with quick wit, a lifetime story, and good sound advice to the very end. Besides his wife Katherine, he leaves two daughters, Heather Duffy and her husband Chris; and Kimberly Irvin and her husband Mike, all of New Britain; a brother, Robert Gerent and his wife Victoria of New Britain; two sisters, Geraldine Bouchard and her husband John, also of New Britain; and Shirley Goss and her husband Richard of Bradenton, FL; 5 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to the Hartford Health Care Home Team and his Doctors for all that they did for us.
