Betty Ruth Wampler, 88, of Friendsville, MD, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, MD. Born August 15, 1930, in Mountain Dale, WV, she was the daughter of the late Venora (Reckart) Umbel. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Robert E. Umbel and Daniel Saylor Wampler.
Mrs. Wampler was a nursing assistant for South Fayette Nursing Home. She is survived by four sons, Dana Umbel, Bedford, PA; Don (Brigit) Wampler and James (Jeanette) Wampler, all of Accident, MD; Vernon (Diane) Wampler, Friendsville; three daughters, Jane (Wilbur) Hinebaugh, Friendsville; Patricia (Steve) Riley, Havre de Grace, MD; Melissa (Richard Swan) Tindel, Frostburg, MD; four brothers, Hugh (Darlene) Umbel, McHenry, MD; Cecil (Gay) Umbel, New Market, MD; Ohlen “Jay” (Luci) Umbel, Jr., Ponce Inlet, FL; Dale (Sherry) Umbel, Friendsville; 28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Betty was a wonderfully caring, resilient and hardworking wife and mother.
Her life was totally invested in her family and her faith. She was dedicated to the Lord and served Him throughout her life by teaching Vacation Bible School, cleaning the church and taking care of the church grounds, working with the Ladies WCSC and most importantly making sure that her own children were grounded in the church. She also spent countless hours volunteering with the Northern High School Band Boosters and working in the concession stand at athletic events when her sons were playing sports.
She totally supported her children and believed they were capable of anything. She continued to attend the school events of her grandchildren well into her seventies. Everyone was welcome in her home and she knew what everyone’s favorite food was and always had it prepared for them.
She exemplified selflessness throughout her long life by her many acts of volunteering, giving back within her community and being of faithful service wherever she was needed. She was a true example of the woman described in Proverbs 31. Betty did so much for so many and touched so very many lives with her caring, kindness and generosity.
Many knew her, loved her and called her friend. Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 943 Second Avenue, Friendsville, on Thursday, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
