Dorothy Slayton entered eternal peace on March 2, 2019. Born June 29, 1929, she was the cherished only child of Pearl and Cecil Martin. Dorothy graduated from Arp High School in 1946 with top marks and was honored to be named the War Chest Queen.

She continued her education at a specialized business school. In 1950, Dorothy married her high school beau, James C. Slayton. They had one son, James Keith Slayton.

The family settled in Carthage, Texas where they owned and operated Service Motors Chrysler Dodge for 21 years. Dorothy invested her time, love and energy in her family and her community. She found beauty in art, ideas and words and had a penchant for reciting poetry.

She filled her historic home with antiques and brought it to life with love, often hosting community events and student gatherings. The old dairy farm on which her home sat provided fertile soil for her gardening passion, where she worked tirelessly to cultivate beauty to share with the world. She could transition from wearing high fashion in the morning to rubber boots in the afternoon and be equally comfortable in both.

Dorothy was always equipped with a warm smile and a great sense of humor. She shared her gift of teaching with countless Sunday School classes and was always tender towards animals. Dorothy waged an extensive battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Her family is thankful to Winkler House in Carthage and Magnolia Place in Jefferson for their loving care. Dorothy’s parents, husband and son preceded her in death. Left to reflect on her beauty and kindness are her daughter-in-law, Kathy Slayton; grandchildren, Sunshine Slayton, Amber Slayton and her husband, Karl Harik, and Rod Muncey; and her great-granddaughter, Alison Harik.

In remembrance of Dorothy, gaze upon a flower and absorb its majesty. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to the Parkinson Research Foundation or Operation Kindness animal shelter. Graveside services with Rev.

Ralph Johnston officiating will be held at Restland Memorial Park, Carthage, Texas at 4:00pm, Monday, March 4, 2019 where Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.
