Dorothy J. Person, 92, of Victorian Pines Estate, formerly of Kingsford, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Maryhill Manor Nursing Home in Niagara, WI. Dorothy was born September 25, 1926 in Niagara, WI, daughter of the late Ferdinand “Fred” and Olive (Johns) Eckelaert. Graduating from Niagara Public School in 1944, she completed her education in 1946 at Milwaukee Business Institute.
Dorothy worked at a CPA office in Milwaukee, Myers Construction in Niagara, Colenso’s Store in the accounts receivable office and for Toby Carlson, MD for 5 years prior to retiring. Dorothy married William “Bill” Person, son of Leona and Oscar Person, on June 7, 1947 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at Holy Trinity Church in 1997 by renewing their wedding vows.
She and Bill lived on Lake Elwood in Florence, WI for many years until moving to Kingsford. They enjoyed traveling and spent 15 winters at Feather Rock mobile home park in Valrico, FL. William preceded her in death on February 16, 2007.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain, serving as a lay minister, president of the “Women of the Church”, Vestry member, Chalice Bearer and was installed as Deacon on Feb 9, 2004. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron in the Niagara and Florence chapters and as Grand Esther for the State of Wisconsin in 1960. In later years, she was a member of the Iron Mountain Eastern Star chapter.
Dorothy was a member of the White Shrine in Iron Mountain and was a past High Priestess. She enjoyed spending time with family and summers at Lake Elwood. It was because of Bill and Dorothy that the entire family loves the lake.
She found joy in volunteering at the VA Hospital and was a member of the Iron Mountain GFWC (General Federation of Womens Club) and Red Hats. Dorothy is survived by three daughters: Catherine Bornfleth of Niagara, WI, Rhonda (Wesley) Peters of Knoxville, TN and Jaye (Dr. Jeffrey) Carroll of Sun City Center, FL; two sons, Kurt (Ramona) Person of Cedarburg, WI and Ross (Katie) Person of Hobe Sound, FL; a sister, Drucilla Meidl of Ft. Meyers, FL; a sister-in-law, Sandy Eckelaert of Sun City, FL; 13 grandchildren, Chad (Brenda) Bornfleth, Jon (Ellisha) Bornfleth, Amanda Bornfleth (Tom Trippler); Joshua (Zoe) Thomas, Kelly (Jonathan) Mack, Nathan (Melanie) Thomas; Dana, Katie and Ryan Carroll; Brad, Kyle, Zachary and Cody Person; 13 great-grandchildren with “one on the way” and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Frederick Eckelaert who died as an infant and Jack Eckelaert; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Halvar (Grace) Person; brother-in-law, Norman Meidl; and two sons-in-law, Frank “Bo” Thomas and Thomas Bornfleth. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:30 am on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am at the church. Candy Buchcuski will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dorothy’s grandsons. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful staff at Victorian Pines Assisted Living and MaryHill Manor Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care.
