Emily Virginia Hiatt Wood passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the age of 93 surrounded by family. She was born February 27, 1925 and was predeceased by husband Glenn Wood, parents Pearlie and Lawrence Hiatt, and brothers Arthur Hiatt, Heggie Hiatt; sisters Lilly Thompson, Celia Hiatt and beloved daughter-in-law Mary Lou Wood. She is survived by her son Vern Wood of Bassett, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law Kent and Debbie Wood of Caswell Beach, NC; brother Reaford Hiatt of Ararat,… Read More » Virginia; six grandchildren, Debbi Wood of Falls Church, VA, Rick Wood and his wife Melissa of Midlothian VA, Bridger Wood and his wife Maggie of Patrick County VA, Denise May and her husband Troy of Salem, VA, Dori Burger and husband Tony of Midlothian VA and Brandon Wood and wife Emily of Rutherfordton NC.

Mrs. Wood is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Wood retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting Co. in 1985 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bassett, VA. Mrs. Wood was affectionately known by family and friends as ‘GW’ (Grandma Wood) and was known for her playful nature, her superior Rook card-playing skills, her ability to flat foot even into her 90’s, and the many delicious chocolate, pecan and coconut pies she made.

She set aside an hour a day to watch her favorite show “The Price is Right” and everyone knew not to call her during that hour. She was so full of life; Mrs. Wood was referred to by many caregivers as a ‘firecracker’. But of all of our memories, she will best be remembered for the great love she had for her family and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The funeral service will held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with the Rev. Lew Bennett and Rev. Brandon Wood officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services. Burial will follow the service at Roselawn Burial Park. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kings Grant and the many caretakers that assisted Mrs. Wood during her stay there.
