Sonny Benfield, age 90 of 715 Susan Lane Martinsville died on May 19, 2018 at SOVAH Health of Martinsville. He was born in Statesville, NC on May 5, 1928 to Clarence P. Benfield, Sr. and Rita Shook Benfield. He was educated in Statesville, NC schools, served in the U.S. Navy, and was a graduate of High Point University where he was on the baseball team.

He was Vice President of Lacy Manufacturing for 29 years. He continued his career with Pannill Knitting and Sara Lee for 11 years. After… Read More » his retirement he and a partner started Bengle Manufacturing in Stuart, VA, where he was Executive Vice President until retirement.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and also served as church Treasurer. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, YMCA Board, United Way Board Member, Boy Scouts, Day Care Center Board; he was an avid runner and tennis player, big Duke Fan, and member of Chatmoss County Club. Survivors include his wife of 63 years Sue M. Benfield of the residence, one son; Lin Benfield of Charlotte, NC, daughters; Barbara Taylor and husband Jim Taylor of St. Louis, MO and Elizabeth Ritchy and husband Alexy Ritchy of Davidson, NC; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark Hinchcliff officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service for a reception at First Presbyterian Church.

Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church at 1901 Patrick Henry Ave. Martinsville, VA 24112.
