Felicia Alice (Curcuru) Sheedy, 91, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2018. She lived a long and happy life and died in her home, overlooking the calming waves of Wonson Cove, surrounded by those who loved her. Filly, as she was known by family and friends, was born in Gloucester on April 1, 1927.
Her father, Salvatore “Sam” Curcuru was born in Terrasini on the island of Sicily in Italy. Her mother, the former Caterina “Catherine” Parisi, was also of Sicilian descent. Filly was always very conscious of her heritage and was proud to celebrate and pass on the culture and traditions of Sicilian-Italians.
Filly grew up in the tightly-knit neighborhood of “The Fort” in Gloucester. She recalled fond stories of times with her two sisters and brother, and her cherished Aunt Mary and Captain Sam Nicastro and Aunt Grace and Captain Philip Curcuru and their fifteen children. She was a graduate of St. Ann’s High School and Vesper George School of Art.
Upon graduation, Filly and her beloved cousin, Felicia Curcuru Lowe, opened a retail clothing store, Reggie’s, in Gloucester. She loved their trips to New York City to buy the latest in fashion and to attend Broadway musical theatre. Later, she worked for the First National and Stop & Shop stores.
Filly met her husband to-be, Robert H. Sheedy, at The Studio Restaurant on Rocky Neck, where she waitressed during her summer school breaks. They would eventually make their home on Rocky Neck, where they shared more than 50 years of marriage, raised their seven children, and entertained their eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Filly and her husband loved to dance and traveled the world together.
Full of grace and style she was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, always making family a priority. She made her home a place the family and their friends could never resist, making for many happy weekly pasta dinners, laughter, and love. In her later years, Filly was fortunate to share the companionship of Mary Elizabeth Phinney, JoAnn Smith and Elin diAngelo; wonderful women who brought independence, friendship and joy to her life.
Filly will be remembered with great admiration and love by her daughters Kathleen Pino and her husband Ralph of St. Albans, Maine, Pauline Sheedy of Gloucester, Deborah Sheedy of Waltham, Joanne McKinnon and her husband Brian of Gloucester; her son, Peter Sheedy and his wife Linda Hurley of Gloucester; by eleven grandchildren, George and Elizabeth Pino, Eli, Nathan and David Misuraca, Teresa Sheedy, Sarah McKinnon, Molly Vincent, Olivia, Ava and Natalie Sheedy; by six great grandchildren Liam, Niamh and Luca Sheedy, Suhana and Sophia Pino, James Leopold. She is survived by three sisters, Grace Lattoff (and her husband Thomas), Rose Horne, and Barbara Sanborn (and her husband Steve) and sister-in-law, Faye Curcuru, all of Gloucester; two brothers John Curcuru (and his wife Linda) of Beverly and Steven Curcuru of Gloucester; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert H. Sheedy, son R. Brian Sheedy, daughter Roberta Sheedy, and brother Samuel Curcuru.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 16 from 4-7 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester.
