Thomas Lupo Jr., 79, husband of Michele (Smith) Lupo of Gloucester, passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 22, 2018. He was born in Gloucester on March 26, 1939, to wonderful parents, the late Thomas Lupo Sr. and Rose (Scola) Lupo. Tom graduated from Gloucester High School with the Class of 1957.

He was a member of the basketball team all four years of high school. He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and later joined the U.S. Army, where he served in the Signal Corp. While serving in the Army, he married his high school sweetheart, Michele, and together they raised four children.

After his discharge, he went to work for Gloucester Engineering and spent the next 43 years as an employee where he made many friends and was looked upon as a role model among the younger employees. Tom was an energetic man who loved to golf and garden and was an avid striped bass fisherman, who could be found at almost every low tide digging clams. He spent the last 20 years attending the Tommy/Cil Golf Tournament, a charity which sponsored the Thomas Lupo III Memorial Scholarship Fund.

This was an event that was near and dear to his heart and he especially enjoyed riding around in the golf cart passing out “special treats” to all the participants. He was a lifetime member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks Post # 892 and a member of the Rockport Golf Club and a communicant of Holy Family Parish. Tom leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Michele; his devoted son, Michael Lupo, of Gloucester, who was by his side daily and assisted in his care during his lengthy illness; his very special daughters, Kelly Salah and her husband, Steve, of Gloucester and Donna Macdonald of East Kingston, New Hampshire, who were always present during his illness; his cherished grandchildren, Erin Willett, wife of Adam and their children, Madelyn, Charlotte and Elliette; Lydia Smith, wife of Derek, and their son, Arlo Mac; Thomas Salah and his wife, Kayla, Benjamin Macdonald, Joshua Salah, Jesse Boyle, Katie Harrington, Gabriele Harrington and his constant companion, Gigi.

He also leaves behind his dedicated sisters, Rose Aiello and Mary Ann Horne and her husband, David; his aunt, Mary Scola; his mother-in-law, Haruko Smith, and many kind nieces, nephews and close friends especially James Burnham, who always found time to visit, which made otherwise difficult days more pleasant. Besides his parents, Rose and Thomas Lupo, he was predeceased by his son, Thomas Lupo III; brother and sister-in-law, Salvatore and Rosemarie Lupo; brother-in-law, Louis Aiello; great niece, Jennie Faye Lupo; his in-laws, Robert Smith and Marjorie and Henry Gorgol. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 29, at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Thomas Lupo III Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2 Hampden Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are by Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. For online condolences, please visit www.
