Mary E. (Jean) Merullo of Reading, MA beloved wife of the late Leonard R. (Lennie) Merullo, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2018 at the Residence at Riverbend in Ipswich. She was born in Boston on July 27, 1920, the daughter of William F. Geggis and Mary J. (Czarnetzki) Geggis. Jean grew up on Byron St., East Boston, neighbor to the love of her life, Lennie, and graduated from East Boston High School, class of 1938.

After Lennie and Jean’s marriage in 1941 they lived in Chicago where Lennie was a short stop for the Chicago Cubs. During this period, Jean enjoyed traveling across the country by train while accompanying her husband on baseball related trips. One of her fondest memories was travelling to Santa Catalina Island for spring training sessions in the 1940s.

Their primary home was in Boston, until they moved to Reading in 1955. Jean’s efforts were focused on raising their four sons. In addition to running a busy household, Jean became involved in church and community activities.

She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a member of the Saint Agnes Lambs Club and a volunteer for the Friends of the Reading Public Library. She also enjoyed reading, cooking classes, and sewing. Over the years, Jean made many of her own outfits.

Her Reading neighbor, the late Mary Good, also shared a flair for fashion and they enjoyed many years of friendship. Lenny and Jean continued to travel throughout the years. They took family and baseball related trips throughout New England, Canada, England, and Germany.

Jean also loved the ocean. Swimming and sailing on her sons’ boats were some of her favorite activities. Jean was a devoted wife of Lennie for 74 years.

She is survived by her sons Leonard Jr. of Ridgefield, CT, Charles of London, England, Richard and his wife Pamela of Es, and David of Reading. She was grandmother to Matt, Lisa, Sam, Chiara and Sarah and great-grandmother to Nick, Allie, and Carly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jean was predeceased by brothers, John and William Geggis, and a sister, Margaret McComiskey. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saint Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St. Reading, MA at 10:30 on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Reading Public Library, 64 Middle Ave.
