James G. Muniz, 78, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Born in Gloucester on January 31, 1940, he was the son of the late William M. and Winifred (Harnish) Muniz. Jim was a 1959 graduate of Gloucester High School.

A gifted athlete, he played varsity baseball and football, participating in the 1958 High School Football Championship in Miami Florida. Following high school, Jim served in the Armored Division of the U.S. Army in Panama from 1959 to 1961. Upon his honorable discharge, Jim returned home and served as a good public servant in the Gloucester Fire Department from 1967 until his retirement in 1996.

Jim was a proud Gloucester native. He was a lifelong member of the Drum Corp. , a former member of the Gloucester Elks, and former Vice Commander of Gloucester VFW Post 1624, where he spent countless hours with his many friends.

A great talker and storyteller, and avid Boston sports fan (especially of the Red Sox and Patriots), Jim would strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone. He loved the outdoors, working as a commercial clammer following his retirement. Most of all, Jim loved his three boys and often took them camping along with some of his nephews.

The apple of his eye was his granddaughter, Eloise. Jim is survived by his sons, Eric Muniz and his wife Chesley, and their daughter Carleen Eloise of Waltham, Mac Muniz and his wife, Melanie of Bennington, VT; and his brother, Robert Muniz and his wife Jean of Gloucester. James was predeceased by his son, James; sisters, Shirley, Ruth, and Marilyn; brothers, William Jr., Ralph, Melvin, Kenneth, and Donald.

Jim’s graveside service will be held on Friday, October 12, at 11:30 a.m. at Cherry Hill Cemetery. Extended family and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Gloucester Firefighters Relief Association, 8 School Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 or the Gloucester VFW, 224 Eastern Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930.
