Joseph Silva, 94, of Gloucester, husband of the late Patricia E. (Sanderson) Silva, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Gloucester on February 10, 1924, son of the late Joseph B. and Mary B. (Sears) Silva. His father died when he was 17 years old.
Joe had to quit high school to support his family. Joe eventually went back to finish and received his diploma. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII serving in England and France.
At times he also was on a submarine chaser in the English Channel. Joe received the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Area Medal. Joseph married the love of his life, Patricia on January 26, 1945, they then went on to have 3 daughters.
In his earlier years he worked along the Gloucester waterfront. Joe took great pride for the next 25 years in his job as a Postman also here in Gloucester, where he would even jump over snow banks to ensure everyone got their mail on time. Later, when Patricia’s health started to fail it was important to him that she stay at home so he could take care of her and be by her side.
Joe enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing and watching baseball, and even loved to do crossword puzzles He led a very active independent life from going to church regularly, to taking care of the upkeep of his own home. Most important to him was being able to spend time with his family. Up until a week before his passing, he would enjoy a drive around town always ending up for a quick visit to see his children and grandchildren.
He always kept up to date on current events and even went out to vote in the latest election. Joe was also a member of the Gloucester Fraternity Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his 3 daughters, Sharon Thibodeaux and her husband Kenneth, Mary Amaral and her husband Michael, Kathy Misuraca and her husband Peter all of Gloucester; his grandson, Michael Amero and his wife Paula of Gloucester; 2 great-grandsons, Michael Amero and his companion Skylar, Curtis Amero and his wife Katie; 6 great-great-grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher, C.J., Matthew, Katrina and J.J.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his infant baby brother, Frank Silva; 3 sisters, Laura Cooney, Mary Ingersoll and Helen Domingos. His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday, November 27, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to a charity of your choice. For online condolences, please visit www.
