John E. Degnan, 84, of Gloucester passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Gloucester on February 4, 1934, son of the late Edward S. and Margaret F. (Cummings) Degnan. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1952.

John was a member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks, Post #892, where he went through the chairs and for years enjoyed being a bartender too. He also had fond memories of his days working for the YMCA. You could find John walking all around the city he loved, always stopping to talk or just to say hi.

He will be missed by many friends and his wonderful neighbors. He is survived by his niece, Catherine Malin and her husband Frank of Old Saybrook, CT, his nephew, Andrew Degnan and his companion Mandy Milan of Gloucester; sister-in-law, Mary Degnan of Gloucester and his great-nephews, Patrick and Christopher Malin both of Old Saybrook, CT. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank P. Degnan and sister, Margaret “Peg” Degnan.

His funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. A visitation will be held prior to the mass in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to SeniorCare, 49 Blackburn Center, Gloucester, MA 01930.
