Robert J. Madruga, 69, of Gloucester, MA lost his courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born in Woburn MA, on March 29, 1949 to the late John P. and Edith (Ward) Madruga. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1966.
He received a Bachelor’s degree from The College of the Holy Cross in 1970. Upon graduating, he received a commission in the United States Navy and proudly served our country as a Lieutenant for 6 years during the Vietnam War. He was awarded several medals and honors including the Vietnam Service Medal and The Presidential Unit Citation for Extraordinary Heroism.
After being honorably discharged, he attended Suffolk University Law School where he received a Juris Doctor degree. After working for a few years at the IRS, Bob started a private law practice in Gloucester, where he proudly worked for more than 30 years. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. He was a lifelong member of The Gloucester Elks #892 and The Gloucester Fraternity Club, as well as Bass Rocks Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing and shared that love with his children and grandchildren.
He treasured his yearly golf trips with his lifelong friends. In addition to his travel while in the Navy, Bob loved traveling to various locations around the globe with June. He had a wonderful sense of humor and reading “Pickles” in the Saturday paper brought him great joy.
Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his children and grandchildren. When the kids would walk in the room, Bob would light up. He always had a story or a life lesson to share with them.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, June G. (Curcuru) Cook-Madruga. His children, Robert W. Madruga and his wife, Monica, Adam Cook, Carley Cook and her companion Eric MacFarlane, Marcia Landergren and her husband Bruce and his ex-son-in-law Anthony Ranaldi. His grandchildren whom he adored, Ryan and Olivia Madruga, Nicholas, Lucia and William Ranaldi, Tyler and Elizabeth Landergren, and Sage Madruga.
His “sister” Jean Madruga, his mother-in-law Anita (Linquata) Curcuru, and countless other special family members including his dog Beau. In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth “Reb” (Wheeler) Madruga, his brother John P. “Toot” Madruga, his son Jamie Madruga, his father-in-law Liborio “Libby” Curcuru and his very special nephew Nicholas Dean Curcuru. Bob’s funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester, MA on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 11:00a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held prior to the mass at James C. Greely Funeral Home 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA, Monday from 9:00a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to Grace Center of Gloucester, 10 Church Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
