Obituary for Fred Allen Birchfield Fred Allen Birchfield, 77 of Hurricane, passed away unexpectedly, September 28, 2018. Born May 21, 1941 in Slab Fork, WV, Fred was a son of the late, Herbert Birchfield and Beulah Cooper Birchfield. He graduated from WV Tech with a degree in Coal and Mechanical Engineering in 1961.
During his career, Fred worked at the Slab Fork Coal Company and U.S. Steel, he later was the Vice President of Quail Ridge Construction in Virginia and Kanawha Manufacturing in Charleston. Fred enjoyed his family, camping and traveling in his motor home to the Smoky Mountains and spending the winter in Florida. During the last 22 years, Fred and his wife, Judy resided in Putnam County and attended St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Judy Birchfield; sister, Jewell Light; children, Pam Shumate, Allen Birchfield, Julie Handley (Kevin), Sally Woods (Chris) and Robin Lam (Chris); mother-in-law, Ilene Houchin and sister-in-law, Jackie Houchin. Fred had 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 10:30am-12:30pm Thursday October 4, 2018 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane.
Funeral service will begin at 12:30pm at the funeral home, with the Reverend Michael Q. Atkinson officiating. A family graveside service will be held at 5:00 pm Thursday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Summersville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Fred’s memory to St. John United Methodist Church, 4536 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot, WV 25560.
