Abernathy, 70, of Perryville, died on February 5, 2019 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO. He was born March 15, 1948 in Perryville, MO son of William “Pete” and Verlene (Milliano) Abernathy. He and Janet M. Wibbenmeyer were married on April 4, 1970.

She survives in Perryville. Gary was a retired aircraft mechanic at Saberliner Corporation. He was of Catholic Faith and was a US Army Vietnam Veteran.

He was a life-long member of V.F.W. and American Legion. Survivors include two daughters and one son, Monica (Mark) Robert of Frohna, Gwen Shy and Ryan (Sydni) Abernathy all of Perryville, four sisters, Sharon Cissell, Gail Cissell, Janine (Steven) Mills and Lisa Abernathy all of Perryville, six grandchildren, Dalton and Garrett Bronenkant, Taylor Armbruster, Seth Gibbar, Brielle and Briar Abernathy. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Mark Abernathy and two brothers-in-law, Ronald and Steve Cissell.

Visitation will be held at Young & Sons Funeral Home on Friday, February 8 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm with American Legion Wake at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 6:30 – 9:30 am with a rosary at 8:30 am. He will then be taken to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 am with Rev.

Rich Wehrmeyer CM officiating. Burial in Mount. Hope cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion and Delta Team.

Memorials preferred to Missouri’s National Veterans Memorial. Young & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Perryville, MO provided the arrangements. Online condolences may be made at youngandsonsfuneral.com.
