Obituary for George M. Scantling George M. Scantling, 83, of Wrightsville died peacefully Monday, September 24, 2018. Born in Wrightsville on June 16, 1935, he was the son of the late Chester S. and Barbara F. (Massa) Scantling. George was the loving husband of Yvonne M. (Markley) Scantling, to whom he was married for 59 years.

George was a 1953 graduate of Wrightsville High School. He went on to serve his country in the US Army. George began his career as a paver for his father’s company, the Chester S. Scantling Paving Company.

He went on to work for the Columbia Water Company, where he retired after 25 years of service. George was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Columbia, a former member of the Wrightsville American Legion, and a member of the White Rose Pigeon Club. George was always known for his great stories.

His passion in life was raising his pigeons. He loved to race his pigeons and mentor young people in the raising of pigeons. In addition to his wife, George is survived by his sister, Catherine Todd of Myrtle Beach, SC and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Sylvester Scantling and his sister, Louisa Hake. A funeral service to celebrate George’s life will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, 655 South 10th Street, Columbia, PA 17512 with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp officiating.

Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville. There will be a viewing at the church on Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George’s memory may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 655 South 10th Street, Columbia, PA 17512.
