Obituary for Luther B. Sowers PH.D. Luther B. Sowers, Ph.D., 93, of York died October 28, 2018 at Manor Care Health Services-Kingston Court. He was the husband of Ruth B. (Brown) Sowers. They were married for 67 years.

Born October 13, 1925 in York, he was the son of the late Paul E. and Bessie (Boyd) Sowers. Luther served in the US Navy during WWII in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean from 1943-1946. He was a 1943 graduate of William Penn Senior High School.

He received his BA from West Chester State Teachers College, MA from Western Maryland College (now McDaniels College), and his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Luther taught in the York City School District and then was the Assistant Superintendent of the York City School District until 1974. He then became the Superintendent of the South Eastern School District from 1974 until his retirement in 1987.

Luther was a member of Advent Lutheran Church for over 80 years. He was active in the church serving several terms on the church council. Luther also served on many committees and boards including the following: the York County Heritage Trust, Springettsbury Township Historic Preservation Committee, ForSight Vision (formerly York County Blind Center), American Red Cross, Arc of York County, York County Parks Foundation Charitable Trust, York County Human Services Advisory Board, York County Juvenile Court Citizens Board, and Memorial Hospital.

He was also involved with the York County Library System, Sertoma Club, York County Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, Bill Goodling Teacher Scholarship Fund, and the Cultural Alliance. His Masonic affiliations included being a 68 year member of the York Lodge No. 266, F&AM and the Harrisburg Consistory.

Luther was a life member of the American Legion Post 791, Shiloh and the VFW Post 895, West York. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his 3 daughters, Jessica A. (Sowers) Jones and her husband, Michael, Kathryn S. Sowers, and Mary E. Sowers all of York; 2 grandchildren, Megan E. (Jones) Morningstar and her husband, Jerry and Kurt M. Jones and his wife, Brittany; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul A. Sowers who was lost at sea during WWII.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 1775 E. Market Street, York with his pastor, the Rev. Daniel V. Biles, officiating. A private burial will be held in Mount Rose Cemetery.
