Obituary for Gordon Wilson Johnson Gordon Wilson “GW” Johnson, 84, of Monroe, died Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Monroe Manor in Monroe. Gordon was born in Chesterfield County, SC, on October 7, 1933, the son of Ellis and Mamie Steen Johnson. He grew up there and shortly after turning 19, he enlisted in the United States Navy.

He served faithfully aboard the USS Buck, DD-761, and was subsequently discharged honorably. After the military, he spent his working days doing painting and travelling. On Christmas of 1987, he showed up unannounced at his brother’s home and he has lived in Indian Trail ever since.

Gordon was a free spirit and enjoyed taking in all life had to offer. One thing he enjoyed was “pig pickings” and he got the rest of his family involved in those. Proud of his military service, he was also part of the VFW, joining the Indian Trail Post where he lived.

Most of all, Gordon loved the time spent with family and friends. Gordon is survived by his brother, Ellis Johnson (wife Shirley) of Indian Trail; a sister, Priscilla Uselding (husband Nick) of Amarillo, TX; a brother, Howard “Shin” Johnson of Amarillo; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Charles, Vernon, Ben, Shelby, Carolyn, Fate and Vicki.

Graveside services honoring the life, love and blessing of Gordon will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, September 20, at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. There, members of the United States Navy will also render their final military salute to their fallen comrade. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s name directly to the VA would be gratefully appreciated.
