Gurney Ray Winters, age 82, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Waters of Roan Highland Nursing Center. Gurney was born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee to the late Thomas and Etta Harris Winters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Caldwell and her husband, Ray Caldwell.

Gurney was a graduate of Cloudland High School in Roan Mountain and proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran on the USS Macon. He had sailed to 13 countries. Gurney was a member of the Teamsters Harrisburg, PA, Local Union #776 and the Teamsters Charlotte, NC #71 and also the American Legion.

He loved being a veteran and sharing events with his fellow veterans, he also loved traveling and driving tractor trailers for over 30 years and was part of the Million Mile Club. Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Jason Ray Winters and wife Joanne, of Mechanicsburg, PA; his daughter, Regina Benoist and husband David, of New Kingstown, PA; three grandchildren, Hunter Ray Winter, of Mechanicsburg, PA and Zachary Benoist and Anberlin Benoist, both of New Kingstown, PA; one sister, Margaret King and husband Alfred, of Elizabethton; the mother of his children, (Jason and Regina), Virginia Winters, of Mt. Holly Springs, PA; and his step children, Tracey Snyder, of Newville, PA, Vicky Peck, of Hanover, PA and Rick Peck, of Carlisle, PA.

Many nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Gurney Ray Winters will be conducted at 10:45 AM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:40 AM on Wednesday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to Disabled Veterans of America, P.O.
