Harry’s Obituary Harry Johnson Dean, 93, of Elkton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 24, 2019, at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, Wenger House. He was born on September 16, 1925, in Elkton, and was a son of the late Austin Bishop and Fannie Lam Dean. Harry attended school in Elkton, VA and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He attended the Mount Pleasant Church, the Freewill Baptist Church and several other churches in the valley. He worked for DuPont for 30 years and also worked for Westinghouse. He enjoyed gardening and sharing all the vegetables with all of his friends and neighbors, hunting, going to church and most of all, spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He married Helen Beatrice Dean on December 8, 1949, who passed away on April 9, 2016. Harry is survived by a son, Ellis Johnson Dean and wife, Mary Ellen, of Grottoes, a daughter, Barbara Smith and husband, Vernon, Jr. of Elkton; grandchildren, Christopher Ray Smith and wife, Nicole, Nathan Johnson Dean and fiancée, Katie McColgan; three great-grandsons, Alexander Jordan Smith, Andrew Nicholas Smith and Ian McColgan; one great-granddaughter, Liliana Jordan Smith and one great great-granddaughter, Amania Kay Smith; one brother, Willard Dean and wife, Maggie; one sister, Edith Moubray and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jessie Dean, Norman R. Dean and Bob Dean and sisters, Ruby Breeden, Letha Monger, Stella McDonald and Nora Dean.

Pastor Travis Hensley, of Covenant Pentecostal Church, will conduct a funeral service on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will be private at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
